Boxing gloves are an essential piece of equipment for any boxer, whether you're punching the bag to improve your physical and mental health or preparing to defend your title in the ring. Boxing gloves protect your hands and wrists from injury and also help to improve your punching technique. These babies need to last as long as possible, so taking care of your gloves is important.

In this post, I'll give you some tips on how to best take care of your boxing gloves to keep them in top condition.

Cleaning

The first step in taking care of your gloves starts before you put them on. By making sure your hands are clean you minimise the risk of bacteria being transferred from your hands to your gloves.

After training, it's important to clean your gloves. Simply wipe down the exterior of the gloves with a damp cloth to remove any sweat or dirt.

Drying

Keeping the inside of your gloves dry is also very important. Sweat can cause your gloves to become damp, which can lead to nasty smells. To prevent this, make sure to stuff your gloves with newspaper or paper towels after a particularly sweaty workout to absorb any moisture. You can also use a dehumidifier or air dryer to help dry your gloves faster.

Alternatively you can get yourself a pair of glove deodorisers or 'glove dogs'. These are little bags filled with an absorbing material such as bamboo charcoal to keep your gloves dry and bacteria-free.

When cleaning and drying your boxing gloves always be mindful of the material of your gloves. It is best to follow the manufacturer's cleaning instructions and first test on a small corner to make sure the cleaning solution won't ruin your gloves.

Knocking out bad smells

If your boxing gloves have a strong odour, you can use a mild detergent or some apple cider vinegar on a clean towel to clean them. Just be sure to rinse them thoroughly and let them air dry properly overnight before you use them again.

Storage

After training, don't forget to take your gloves out of your gym bag as soon as you get home. The dark and cramped space will just encourage bacteria to grow.

Once they are clean and dry, keep your boxing gloves properly stored. When not in use, put them away in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Long term exposure to sunlight can lead to cracks being formed and the material being ruined (especially if you work with leather gloves).

You can also use a protective bag or cover to keep your gloves in good condition when not in use.

Check the Condition and fit

Keeping an eye on the condition of your gloves is also a vital part in maintaining them. If you notice any signs of wear or tear, such as frayed stitching or holes in the material, it's time to replace your gloves.

The same goes for the fit. Over time, gloves will stretch and lose their shape. To ensure the best fit and protection, you should periodically check the fit of your gloves and adjust the laces or straps if necessary. If you can't make them fit anymore, its time to look at a new pair.

Right Type of Gloves

Finally, it's important to remember that not all gloves are created equal. Different types of gloves are designed for different purposes, such as training or sparring. Be sure to use the appropriate gloves for the type of activity you're doing to ensure the best possible protection.

As you can see, taking care of your boxing gloves is very important. Keeping them in the best condition means they can do their job and protect your hands. With proper care, your gloves will be ready to take on whatever you throw at them, so you can focus on perfecting your punches.
